Navigating the sewers in Resident Evil 2 presents players with numerous survival challenges, but few obstacles test your logic quite like the Monitor Room plug sequence. During a B Scenario or 2nd Run playthrough, Capcom alters the placement of the key items to keep returning veterans on their toes. Understanding how to interpret the fresh clues provided in the room allows you to unlock the door without wasting precious resources or health items.

Understanding the 2nd Run Riddle

When you examine the notice board in the Monitor Room during a 2nd Run, you will find a riddle that completely changes the plug arrangements from the first scenario. The clue states that the Rook sits next to the Knight but does not face the Queen. Additionally, it reveals that the King is positioned across from the Knight at the very end of the wall, while the Knight is not placed in its original wall marking.

Left Wall Plug Sequence

To solve the puzzle efficiently, stand in the center of the room facing the locked door and examine the wall on your left. Starting from the socket farthest from the locked door and moving toward it, you must insert the King Plug first. Next to the King, place the Bishop Plug in the middle socket, and finish the left side by placing the Queen Plug closest to the door.

Right Wall Plug Sequence

After completing the left side, turn around to face the sockets along the right wall. Starting again from the far end socket farthest from the door, insert the Knight Plug first. Follow this by placing the Rook Plug in the middle slot and ending with the Pawn Plug in the final socket closest to the door.

Tips for Retrieving the Key Plugs

Before you can place the pieces, you must gather the King, Queen, and Rook Plugs scattered across the lower sewer areas. Navigating the Supplies Storage Room requires swapping the King and Queen Plugs back and forth to open gated paths and retrieve the Spark Shot. Always keep track of your inventory space so you can carry all six electronic plugs back to the Monitor Room in a single trip.
